Son of God

Nobody thought he’d come like he did:
born like a poor child, in a borrowed house,
the son of a woman seeming no different from any other
except in her glowing faith and huge generosity.
Long after the kings who envied him
have been forgotten,
the name of Jesus, Son of God and Son of Mary,
is remembered in lands not even then heard of.
Long after Mary’s own birthplace is forgotten,
or the shape of her face and the age of her death,
we remember that she was a woman who gave to God
her whole life, her whole womanhood,
and because of that ‘all generations call her blessed’.
Mary, you remind us of what’s best in our human nature-
sympathy, compassion, motherhood, love and care.
You remind us too that we are made not just for this life
because as you are now, we one day shall be
through the grace and gift of God.
